VETiS

What is VETiS?

VETiS stands for Vocational Education & Training in Schools, which means learning whatever you need to know about a particular job or vocation. There are many VETiS courses you can undertake while you are at school which count towards your VCE or VCAL and can assist you in gaining employment or further education at TAFE or University. All courses are based directly on national industry or enterprise competency standards.

VETiS Programs

VETiS programs include:
  • the theoretical background required for work in the industry
  • practical, hands on experience gained through work placement
  • skills development
  • a chance to improve your understanding of the related industry
VET in Schools programs offer students vocational certificates approved for senior secondary school students, and endorsed for recognition in both the Victorian Certificate of Education and the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

As part of your training you may complete Structured Workplace Learning that provides you with the opportunity to put your skills and knowledge into practice.

VETiS in VCE

On successful completion of this program students are eligible for credit of up to four units on the VCE Statement of Results. Two units are deemed to be at unit 1-2 level and two at 3-4 level. Students receive credit towards completion of their certificate as well as the nationally recognised certification (where available) or they can complete further assessment to obtain a study score.

A Study Score is available for a number of VETiS programs. Students wishing to obtain a study score will need to achieve all competencies, successfully complete all units of work and undertake further assessment in the examination period.

Complementary VCE Units-
There are no pre-requisite units of study required for VETiS programs, except where units 1 and 2 must be completed to enrol in units 3 and 4. However, students should consult with their VETiS Coordinator, Careers Advisor or Managed Individual Pathways (MIPs) Coordinator for advice about the best combination of units for their needs.

VETiS in VCAL

Successful completion of a VET in Schools program allows VCAL students to gain credit in the VCAL certificate in either the Industry Specific Skills strand or the Work Related Skills strand. The credit may be at Foundation, Intermediate or Senior level.

It is important to note VCAL students undertaking an Intermediate or Senior level Certificate must undertake a VETiS program to meet the minimum VCAL course requirements of the Industry Specific Skills strand.

Industry Specific Skills Strand

VCAL students undertake VETiS units to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes related to their vocational pathway. Upon the successful completion of each 100 nominal hours of accredited VETiS unit of competence, students will receive a credit of one unit in the VCAL Industry Specific Strand. (Note: This is equivalent to a VCE unit).

Work Related Skills Strand

The Work Related Strand in VCAL is designed to develop students’ employability skills, their knowledge and to foster attitudes valued within community and work environments.

VETiS programs may also be credited into the Work Related Skills strand. The VETiS structured workplace learning placement may contribute significantly to the completion of the VCAL Work Related Skills strand unit.
